Young Barça Academy Dominican Republic player Daniel González represented the Dominican Republic U14 national team at one of the Caribbean’s most important youth football tournaments, helping his country finish among the top four teams in Tier I.
The tournament, organised by the Caribbean Football Union (CFU), brought together U14 players from a number of Caribbean countries and territories and was held in Punta Cana in August, with games played at Los Establos in Cap Cana. The competition provides many of these young players with their first taste of international football at national team level and forms part of their development within their respective national football structures.
Key player for national team
For González, the call-up gave him the opportunity to represent his country in an international competition and continue his development. The Barça youngster impressed throughout the tournament, scoring twice in the 3-2 win over Barbados and also providing an assist in one of the decisive group-stage games. He finished the competition with two goals and was one of the Dominican Republic’s standout performers.
Road to the semi-finals
The Dominican Republic competed in Tier I, the highest level of the competition, and were drawn in Group A alongside Martinique, Barbados and Bermuda. They defeated Martinique 5-0, beat Barbados 3-2 and drew 0-0 with Bermuda. Those results saw the Dominican Republic finish top of the group with seven points and qualify for the tournament semi-finals.
The Dominican Republic eventually lost to Haiti in the semi-finals, ending their campaign among the top four teams in Tier I, which featured 12 of the competition’s strongest sides.
