For the third consecutive year, the Barça Academy Ciudad de México Cup was held in May, and this year it featured a girls' competition for the first time. The tournament, which continues to grow year after year, brought together more than 500 players from teams based in Mexico City, Barça Academy teams and teams from other organisations that did not want to miss the opportunity to enjoy a fantastic celebration of football and Barça values. The competition was held across two venues to accommodate the large number of participants and teams and to ensure the smooth running of the event.
The most special aspect of this year's edition was the commitment to promoting women's football, in the same way that the academy does on a daily basis. More than 100 girls already play for Barça Academy Ciudad de México teams. A total of 12 teams took part in this first female edition, with all matches played at the Bosque Real venue, where family members and friends enthusiastically supported the players throughout.
Growth in girls' teams
Barça Academy Ciudad de México started operations six years ago and has encouraged female participation from the very beginning. In just one season, the academy has increased the number of girls playing from 60 to 120, and the forecast for next season is for further growth and even more girls taking up the sport.
The academy currently has nine girls' teams, with the aim of increasing that number to 14 next season. This demonstrates a genuine and ongoing commitment to promoting football among girls in Mexico.
